About
Whew, so we're finally here. I've been thinking about starting a blog for over a year now, and I've been trying to speak it into existence since the thought first crossed my mind.
I graduated from the University of Maine in December 2019 with a degree in English, a concentration in analytical writing and minors in philosophy and professional writing. It only makes sense that I would start writing and publishing, right?
To be honest, everybody I've talked to: parents, friends, mentors, bosses... they've all told me what a good idea this would be. So why didn't I do it sooner? Well, part of it has to do with time (or lack thereof) and the awful feeling of imposter syndrome. What do I even have to write about? Why would anybody care? Is my perspective unique and useful? I've given those questions a lot of thought.
It's never been a secret how much I love the outdoors. I've been lucky enough to get paid to play outside and teach people how to recreate in some of my favorite ways, from climbing, to skiing, to backpacking and more! In fact, this year has been a huge year of professional growth for me. I recently got certified as a Single Pitch Climbing Instructor, this summer became a Registered Maine Guide, in the early spring I took my first Wilderness First Responder course, and last fall became a Climbing Wall Instructor.
This wasn't always my plan, but I'm so lucky that I found my passion for outdoor instruction as an employee at my university's outdoor recreation center. This is the place that I first learned how rock climb, inside and outside, along with many other skills and life lessons that I could not even begin to cover here. I've had the opportunity to lead trips, plan events, teach and mentor others, facilitate challenge courses, give feedback, but most importantly, learn and grow.
I plan to write about my experiences as a young woman in the outdoors, with the hope that it will speak to some folks that stumble across this blog. Hopefully, this perspective is useful, and as it is my individual perspective, this blog will serve primarily as a collection of opinion pieces.
I'm a believer in the power of feedback for positive change, so I would love to hear from readers! For example, what are you finding interesting, entertaining, and inspiring? What would you like to see more of?
Thanks for checking it out!
